%20%20%20%20%20%20George%20I%20King%20of%20Great%20Britain%20and%20Ireland%20%20%20George%20I%20(George%20Ludwig%20von%20Guelph-d%5CEste)%20(28%20May%201660%26%238211%3B11%20June%201727)%20was%20Duke%20of%20Brunswick-L%5CxFCneburg%20(Hanover)%20from%2023%20January%201698%2C%20and%20King%20of%20Great%20Britain%20and%20King%20of%20Ireland%20from%201%20August%201714%2C%20until%20his%20death.%20He%20was%20also%20the%20Archbannerbearer%20(afterwards%20Archtreasurer)%20and%20a%20Prince%20Elector%20of%20the%20Holy%20Roman%20Empire.%20George%20I%2C%20the%20first%20Hanoverian%20monarch%20of%20Great%20Britain%20and%20Ireland%2C%20was%20not%20a%20fluent%20speaker%20of%20the%20English%20language%3B%20instead%2C%20he%20spoke%20his%20native%20German%2C%20and%20was%20for%20this%20ridiculed%20by%20his%20British%20subjects.%20During%20his%20reign%2C%20the%20powers%20of%20the%20monarchy%20found%20themselves%20diminished%3B%20the%20modern%20system%20of%20government%20by%20a%20Cabinet%20underwent%20development.%20During%20the%20later%20years%20of%20his%20reign%2C%20actual%20power%20was%20held%20by%20a%20de%20facto%20Prime%20Minister%2C%20Sir%20Robert%20Walpole.%20%20%20Early%20years%20George%20was%20born%20on%2028%20May%201660%20in%20Hanover%2C%20Germany.%20He%20was%20the%20eldest%20son%20of%20a%20German%20Prince%2C%20Ernst%20August%2C%20Duke%20of%20Brunswick-L%5CxFCneburg%2C%20and%20of%20his%20wife%2C%20Sophia.%20George%20was%20the%20heir-apparent%20to%20his%20father%5Cs%20vast%20German%20territory.%20In%201682%2C%20George%20married%20his%20first%20cousin%2C%20the%20Princess%20Sophia%20of%20Celle.%20After%20they%20had%20two%20children%2C%20George%20(in%201683)%20and%20Sophia%20Dorothea%20(in%201687)%2C%20the%20couple%20were%20estranged.%20George%20instead%20preferred%20his%20mistress%2C%20Ehrengard%20Melusine%20von%20der%20Schulenburg%2C%20whom%20he%20later%20created%20Duchess%20of%20Munster%20and%20Kendal%20in%20Great%20Britain%2C%20and%20by%20whom%20he%20had%20at%20least%20three%20illegitimate%20children.%20Sophia%2C%20meanwhile%2C%20had%20her%20own%20romantic%20connexion%20with%20the%20Swedish%20Count%20Philip%20Christoph%20von%20K%5CxF6nigsmarck.%20Threatened%20with%20the%20scandal%20of%20an%20elopement%2C%20the%20Hanoverian%20court%20ordered%20the%20lovers%20to%20desist.%20When%20they%20refused%2C%20George%20appears%20to%20have%20countenanced%20a%20plan%20to%20murder%20K%5CxF6nigsmarck.%20K%5CxF6nigsmarck%20was%20then%20killed%20in%20July%201694%2C%20and%20his%20body%20was%20then%20thrown%20into%20a%20river.%20The%20murder%20appears%20to%20have%20been%20committed%20by%20four%20of%20George%5Cs%20courtiers%2C%20one%20of%20whom%20is%20said%20to%20have%20been%20paid%20the%20great%20sum%20of%20150%2C000%20talers%20(about%20one%20hundred%20times%20the%20annual%20salary%20of%20the%20highest-paid%20minister).%20George%5Cs%20marriage%20to%20Sophia%20was%20dissolved%2C%20not%20on%20the%20grounds%20that%20either%20of%20them%20committed%20adultery%2C%20but%20on%20the%20grounds%20that%20Sophia%20had%20%5Cabandoned%5C%20her%20husband.%20With%20the%20agreement%20of%20his%20wife%5Cs%20father%2C%20George%20had%20Sophia%20imprisoned%20in%20the%20Castle%20of%20Ahlden%20in%20her%20native%20Celle.%20She%20was%20denied%20access%20to%20her%20children%20and%20her%20father%2C%20and%20forbidden%20to%20remarry.%20She%20was%2C%20however%2C%20endowed%20with%20an%20income%20for%20her%20servants%20and%20was%20allowed%20to%20ride%20in%20a%20carriage%20outside%20her%20castle%20(albeit%20under%20supervision).%20%20Early%20reign%20In%201698%2C%20Ernst%20August%20died%2C%20leaving%20all%20of%20his%20territories%20to%20George%2C%20with%20the%20exception%20of%20the%20Prince-Bishopric%20of%20Osnabr%5CxFCck.%20(The%20Prince-Bishopric%20was%20not%20an%20hereditary%20title%3B%20instead%2C%20it%20alternated%20between%20Protestant%20and%20Roman%20Catholic%20incumbents.)%20George%20thus%20became%20Duke%20of%20Brunswick-L%5CxFCneburg%2C%20and%20the%20Archbannerbearer%20and%20Prince-Elector%20of%20the%20Holy%20Roman%20Empire.%20His%20court%20in%20Hanover%20was%20graced%20by%20many%20cultural%20icons%2C%20such%20as%20the%20mathematician%20Gottfried%20Wilhelm%20von%20Leibniz%20and%20the%20composer%20Georg%20Friedrich%20H%5CxE4ndel.%20Shortly%20after%20George%5Cs%20accession%2C%20the%20Parliament%20of%20England%20passed%20the%20Act%20of%20Settlement%201701%2C%20whereunder%20George%5Cs%20mother%2C%20the%20Electress%20Sophia%2C%20was%20designated%20heir%20to%20the%20British%20Throne%20if%20the%20then-reigning%20monarch%20(William%20III)%20and%20his%20sister-in-law%20(the%20Princess%20Anne%20of%20Denmark)%20both%20died%20without%20issue.%20The%20succession%20was%20so%20designed%20because%20Sophia%20was%20the%20closest%20Protestant%20relative%20of%20the%20British%20Royal%20Family%3B%20numerous%20Catholics%20with%20superior%20hereditary%20claims%20had%20to%20be%20bypassed.%20In%20England%2C%20the%20Tories%20generally%20opposed%20allowing%20a%20foreigner%20to%20succeed%20to%20the%20Throne%2C%20whilst%20the%20Whigs%20supported%20the%20idea.%20George%20was%20reluctant%20to%20accept%20the%20English%20plan%2C%20but%20his%20Hanoverian%20advisors%20suggested%20that%20he%20should%20acquiesce%20so%20that%20his%20German%20possessions%20would%20become%20more%20secure.%20Shortly%20after%20George%5Cs%20accession%20in%20Hanover%2C%20the%20War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession%20broke%20out.%20At%20issue%20was%20the%20right%20of%20Philip%2C%20the%20grandson%20of%20the%20French%20King%20Louis%20XIV%2C%20to%20succeed%20to%20the%20Spanish%20Throne%20under%20the%20terms%20of%20the%20will%20of%20the%20Spanish%20King%20Charles%20II.%20The%20Holy%20Roman%20Empire%2C%20the%20United%20Provinces%2C%20England%2C%20Hanover%20and%20many%20other%20German%20states%20opposed%20Philip%5Cs%20right%20to%20succeed%20because%20they%20feared%20that%20France%20would%20become%20too%20powerful%20if%20it%20also%20could%20control%20Spain.%20George%5Cs%20support%20for%20England%20may%20have%20conciliated%20many%20Englishmen%2C%20but%20it%20did%20not%20impress%20the%20people%20of%20Scotland.%20The%20English%20Parliament%20had%20settled%20on%20Sophia%2C%20Electress%20of%20Hanover%2C%20without%20consulting%20the%20Estates%20of%20Scotland%20(the%20Scottish%20Parliament).%20In%201703%2C%20the%20Estates%20passed%20a%20bill%2C%20under%20which%20they%20would%20elect%20Anne%5Cs%20successor%20from%20amongst%20the%20Protestant%20descendants%20of%20past%20Scottish%20monarchs.%20This%20successor%20could%20not%20be%20the%20same%20individual%20as%20the%20successor%20to%20the%20English%20Throne%2C%20unless%20numerous%20political%20and%20economic%20concessions%20were%20made%20by%20England.%20The%20Royal%20Assent%20was%20originally%20withheld%2C%20but%20the%20Estates%20refused%20to%20raise%20taxes%20and%20threatened%20to%20withdraw%20troops%20from%20the%20army%20fighting%20in%20the%20War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession.%20In%201704%2C%20Anne%20capitulated%2C%20and%20her%20Royal%20Assent%20was%20granted%20to%20the%20bill%2C%20which%20became%20the%20Act%20of%20Security.%20Angered%2C%20the%20English%20Parliament%20passed%20several%20measures%20which%20restricted%20Anglo-Scottish%20trade%20and%20crippled%20the%20Scottish%20economy.%20In%201707%2C%20the%20Act%20of%20Union%20was%20passed%3B%20it%20united%20England%20and%20Scotland%20into%20a%20single%20nation%2C%20the%20Kingdom%20of%20Great%20Britain.%20The%20rules%20of%20succession%20established%20by%20the%20Act%20of%20Settlement%20were%20retained.%20The%20House%20of%20Hanover%20was%20not%20entirely%20acceptable%20to%20many%20Scotsmen%2C%20as%20would%20be%20later%20reflected%20by%20rebellions%20during%20George%20I%5Cs%20reign.%20In%201710%2C%20the%20Duke%20of%20Bavaria%20was%20degraded%20for%20defecting%20from%20the%20Imperial%20side%20to%20the%20French%20side%3B%20his%20dignity%20of%20Archtreasurer%20of%20the%20Empire%20was%20granted%20to%20George.%20In%20the%20same%20year%2C%20the%20Reichstag%2C%20or%20Imperial%20Assembly%2C%20formally%20confirmed%20George%5Cs%20position%20as%20a%20Prince-Elector.%20The%20War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession%20would%20continue%201713%2C%20when%20it%20ended%20indecisively%20with%20the%20ratification%20of%20the%20Treaty%20of%20Utrecht.%20Philip%20was%20allowed%20to%20succeed%20to%20the%20Spanish%20Throne%2C%20but%20he%20was%20removed%20from%20the%20line%20of%20succession%20to%20the%20French%20Throne.%20%20Accession%20in%20Great%20Britain%20George%5Cs%20mother%2C%20the%20Electress%20Sophia%2C%20died%20only%20a%20few%20weeks%20before%20Anne%2C%20Queen%20of%20Great%20Britain.%20Pursuant%20to%20the%20Act%20of%20Union%201707%2C%20George%20became%20King%20of%20Great%20Britain%20when%20Anne%20died%20on%201%20August%201714.%20He%20did%20not%20arrive%20in%20Great%20Britain%20until%2018%20September%3B%20during%20his%20absence%2C%20the%20Lord%20Chief%20Justice%20of%20the%20King%5Cs%20Bench%20acted%20as%20a%20regent.%20He%20was%20crowned%20at%20Westminster%20Abbey%20on%2020%20October.%20Upon%20his%20accession%20in%20Britain%2C%20George%20established%20a%20firm%20practice%20relating%20to%20the%20dignity%20of%20Prince.%20Before%20the%20Hanoverians%2C%20the%20only%20princely%20dignities%20were%20those%20of%20Prince%20of%20Wales%20(customarily%20granted%20to%20the%20heir-apparent)%20and%20Princess%20Royal%20(customarily%20granted%20to%20the%20Sovereign%5Cs%20eldest%20daughter).%20The%20other%20members%20of%20the%20Royal%20Family%20were%20only%20entitled%20to%20the%20styles%20%5CLord%5C%20and%20%5CLady.%5C%20George%20I%2C%20however%2C%20was%20accustomed%20to%20the%20German%20practice%2C%20whereunder%20the%20princely%20dignity%20was%20more%20common.%20Consequently%2C%20the%20Sovereign%5Cs%20children%20and%20grandchildren%20in%20the%20male%20line%20became%20Princes%20and%20Princesses%20styled%20%5CRoyal%20Highness%2C%5C%20and%20great-grandchildren%20in%20the%20male%20line%20became%20Princes%20and%20Princesses%20styled%20%5CHighness%5C.%20George%20I%20primarily%20resided%20in%20Great%20Britain%2C%20though%20he%20often%20visited%20his%20home%20in%20Hanover.%20During%20the%20King%5Cs%20absences%2C%20power%20was%20vested%20either%20in%20his%20son%2C%20George%2C%20Prince%20of%20Wales%2C%20or%20in%20a%20committee%20of%20%5CGuardians%20and%20Justices%20of%20the%20Kingdom%5C.%20Even%20whilst%20he%20was%20in%20Great%20Britain%2C%20the%20King%20occupied%20himself%20with%20Hanoverian%20concerns.%20He%20spoke%20poor%20English%2C%20and%20many%20of%20his%20contemporaries%20thought%20him%20unintelligent.%20Power%20consequently%20passed%20from%20the%20Crown%20to%20its%20ministers.%20In%201715%2C%20when%20not%20even%20a%20year%20had%20passed%20after%20George%5Cs%20accession%2C%20he%20was%20faced%20with%20a%20Jacobite%20Rebellion%2C%20which%20became%20known%20as%20%5CThe%20Fifteen%5C.%20The%20Jacobites%20sought%20to%20put%20Anne%5Cs%20Catholic%20brother%2C%20James%20Francis%20Edward%20Stuart%20(whom%20they%20called%20%5CJames%20III%5C%2C%20and%20who%20was%20known%20to%20the%20English%20as%20the%20%5COld%20Pretender%5C)%20on%20the%20Throne.%20The%20Pretender%20instigated%20rebellion%20in%20Scotland%2C%20where%20support%20for%20Jacobitism%20was%20stronger%20than%20in%20England.%20John%20Erskine%2C%206th%20Earl%20of%20Mar%2C%20an%20embittered%20Scottish%20nobleman%20who%20had%20previously%20supported%20the%20Glorious%20Revolution%2C%20led%20the%20rebels.%20The%20Fifteen%2C%20however%2C%20was%20a%20dismal%20failure%3B%20Lord%20Mar%5Cs%20battle%20plans%20were%20poor%2C%20and%20the%20Old%20Pretender%20had%20not%20arrived%20in%20Scotland%20in%20time.%20By%20the%20end%20of%20the%20year%201715%2C%20the%20rebellion%20had%20all%20but%20collapsed.%20Faced%20with%20impending%20defeat%2C%20Lord%20Mar%20and%20the%20Pretender%20fled%20to%20France%20in%20the%20next%20February.%20After%20the%20Fifteen%20was%20crushed%2C%20the%20British%20government%20dealt%20with%20the%20insurgents%20harshly.%20Several%20prisoners%20were%20executed%3B%20the%20remainder%20were%20enslaved%20in%20the%20colonies.%20Numerous%20Scottish%20noble%20families%20lost%20their%20estates.%20Several%20members%20of%20the%20Tory%20Party%20sympathised%20with%20the%20Jacobites.%20George%20I%20began%20to%20distrust%20the%20Tories%2C%20and%20power%20thus%20passed%20to%20the%20Whigs.%20Whig%20dominance%20would%20be%20so%20great%20under%20George%20I%20that%20the%20Tories%20would%20not%20return%20to%20power%20for%20another%20half-century.%20As%20soon%20as%20the%20Whigs%20came%20to%20power%2C%20Parliament%20passed%20the%20Septennial%20Act%2C%20which%20extended%20the%20maximum%20duration%20of%20Parliament%20to%20seven%20years%20(although%20it%20could%20be%20dissolved%20earlier%20by%20the%20Sovereign).%20Thus%2C%20Whigs%20already%20in%20power%20could%20remain%20in%20such%20a%20position%20for%20a%20greater%20period%20of%20time.%20%20War%20and%20rebellion%20After%20his%20accession%20in%20Great%20Britain%2C%20George%5Cs%20relationship%20with%20his%20son%20(which%20had%20always%20been%20poor)%20worsened.%20George%2C%20Prince%20of%20Wales%20constantly%20encouraged%20opposition%20to%20his%20father%5Cs%20policies.%20His%20home%2C%20Leicester%20House%2C%20became%20a%20meeting%20place%20for%20the%20King%5Cs%20political%20opponents.%20In%201717%2C%20the%20birth%20of%20a%20grandson%20led%20George%20I%20to%20quarrel%20with%20the%20Prince%20of%20Wales.%20The%20Prince%20and%20Princess%20of%20Wales%2C%20as%20well%20as%20their%20children%2C%20were%20all%20thrown%20out%20of%20the%20royal%20residence.%20George%20I%20and%20his%20son%20would%20later%20be%20reconciled%2C%20but%20would%20never%20again%20be%20on%20cordial%20terms.%20Such%20father-son%20hatred%20appears%20to%20have%20recurred%20among%20Hanoverian%20monarchs%3B%20George%20II%2C%20for%20example%2C%20almost%20exiled%20his%20son%2C%20the%20Prince%20Frederick%2C%20Prince%20of%20Wales%2C%20to%20the%20British%20colonies.%20George%20I%20was%20active%20in%20directing%20British%20foreign%20policy%20during%20his%20early%20years.%20In%201717%2C%20he%20contributed%20to%20the%20creation%20of%20the%20Triple%20Alliance%2C%20an%20anti-Spanish%20league%20composed%20of%20Great%20Britain%2C%20France%20and%20the%20United%20Provinces.%20In%201718%2C%20the%20Holy%20Roman%20Empire%20was%20added%20to%20the%20body%2C%20which%20became%20known%20as%20the%20Quadruple%20Alliance.%20The%20subsequent%20War%20of%20the%20Quadruple%20Alliance%20involved%20the%20same%20issue%20as%20the%20War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession.%20The%20Treaty%20of%20Utrecht%20had%20allowed%20the%20grandson%20of%20Louis%20XIV%20Philip%20to%20succeed%20to%20the%20Spanish%20Throne%2C%20on%20the%20condition%20that%20he%20gave%20up%20his%20rights%20to%20succeed%20to%20the%20French%20Throne.%20Upon%20the%20death%20of%20Louis%20XIV%2C%20however%2C%20Philip%20attempted%20to%20violate%20the%20treaty%20and%20take%20the%20Crown%20of%20France.%20But%20with%20even%20the%20French%20fighting%20against%20him%20in%20the%20War%2C%20Philip%5Cs%20armies%20fared%20poorly.%20As%20a%20result%2C%20the%20Spanish%20and%20French%20Thrones%20remained%20separate.%20George%20I%20was%20faced%20with%20a%20second%20rebellion%20in%201719.%20The%20Old%20Pretender%20sought%20to%20fight%20in%20%5Cthe%20Nineteen%5C%20with%20Spanish%20aid%2C%20but%20stormy%20seas%20allowed%20only%20about%20three%20hundred%20Spanish%20troops%20to%20arrive%20in%20Scotland.%20The%20Pretender%20set%20up%20his%20government%20near%20Eilean%20Donan%20Castle%20on%20the%20west%20Scottish%20coast%2C%20only%20for%20it%20to%20be%20destroyed%20by%20British%20ships%20a%20month%20later.%20Attempts%20to%20recruit%20Scottish%20soldiers%20yielded%20a%20fighting%20force%20of%20only%20about%20a%20thousand%20men.%20The%20Jacobites%20were%20poorly%20equipped%2C%20and%20were%20easily%20defeated%20by%20British%20artillery.%20The%20Scotsmen%20dispersed%20into%20the%20Scottish%20Highlands%2C%20and%20the%20Spaniards%20surrendered.%20The%20invasion%20of%201719%20never%20posed%20any%20serious%20threat%20to%20the%20Government%2C%20and%20further%20Jacobite%20plots%20were%20even%20more%20farcical.%20%20Ministries%20In%201717%2C%20when%20the%20Whigs%20came%20to%20power%2C%20George%5Cs%20chief%20ministers%20included%20Sir%20Robert%20Walpole%2C%20Charles%20Townshend%2C%202nd%20Viscount%20Townshend%2C%20James%20Stanhope%2C%201st%20Viscount%20Stanhope%20(afterwards%201st%20Earl%20Stanhope)%20and%20Charles%20Spencer%2C%203rd%20Earl%20of%20Sunderland.%20In%20the%20same%20year%2C%20Lord%20Townshend%20and%20Walpole%20were%20removed%20from%20the%20Cabinet%20by%20their%20counterparts%3B%20Lord%20Stanhope%20became%20supreme%20in%20foreign%20affairs%2C%20and%20Lord%20Sunderland%20the%20same%20in%20domestic%20matters.%20Lord%20Sunderland%5Cs%20power%20began%20to%20wane%20in%201719.%20He%20introduced%20a%20Peerage%20Bill%2C%20which%20attempted%20to%20limit%20the%20size%20of%20the%20House%20of%20Lords%20(mostly%20composed%20of%20Tory%20aristocrats)%2C%20but%20was%20defeated.%20An%20even%20greater%20problem%20was%20the%20South%20Sea%20Bubble.%20In%201719%2C%20the%20South%20Sea%20Company%20proposed%20to%20convert%20%5CxA330%2C981%2C712%20of%20the%20British%20national%20debt.%20At%20the%20time%2C%20government%20bonds%20were%20extremely%20difficult%20to%20trade%20due%20to%20unrealistic%20restrictions%3B%20for%20example%2C%20it%20was%20not%20permitted%20to%20redeem%20certain%20bonds%20unless%20the%20original%20debtor%20was%20still%20alive.%20Each%20bond%20represented%20a%20very%20large%20sum%2C%20and%20could%20not%20be%20divided%20and%20sold.%20Thus%2C%20the%20South%20Sea%20Company%20sought%20to%20convert%20high-interest%2C%20untradeable%20bonds%20to%20low-interest%2C%20easily-tradeable%20ones.%20The%20Company%20bribed%20Lord%20Stanhope%20to%20support%20their%20plan%3B%20they%20were%20also%20supported%20by%20Lord%20Sunderland.%20Company%20prices%20rose%20rapidly%3B%20the%20shares%20had%20cost%20%5CxA3128%20in%20January%201720%2C%20but%20were%20valued%20at%20%5CxA3550%20when%20Parliament%20accepted%20the%20scheme%20in%20May.%20The%20price%20reached%20%5CxA31000%20by%20August.%20Uncontrolled%20selling%2C%20however%2C%20caused%20the%20stock%20to%20plummet%20to%20%5CxA3150%20by%20the%20end%20of%20September.%20Many%20individuals%26%238212%3Bincluding%20aristocrats%26%238212%3Bwere%20completely%20ruined.%20The%20economic%20crisis%2C%20known%20as%20the%20South%20Sea%20Bubble%2C%20made%20George%20I%20and%20his%20ministers%20extremely%20unpopular.%20Lord%20Stanhope%20died%20and%20Lord%20Sunderland%20resigned%20in%201721%2C%20allowing%20the%20rise%20of%20Sir%20Robert%20Walpole.%20(Lord%20Sunderland%20retained%20a%20degree%20of%20personal%20influence%20with%20George%20I%20until%20he%20died%20in%201722.)%20Walpole%20became%20George%5Cs%20primary%20minister%2C%20although%20the%20title%20%5CPrime%20Minister%5C%20was%20not%20formally%20applied%20to%20him%3B%20officially%2C%20he%20was%20only%20the%20First%20Lord%20of%20the%20Treasury.%20His%20management%20of%20the%20South%20Sea%20crisis%20helped%20avoid%20a%20dispute%20between%20the%20King%20and%20the%20House%20of%20Commons%20over%20responsibility%20for%20the%20affair.%20Walpole%20strengthened%20his%20influence%20in%20the%20House%20of%20Commons%20through%20bribery.%20The%20Septennial%20Act%2C%20by%20lengthening%20the%20terms%20of%20members%20of%20the%20House%20from%20three%20to%20seven%20years%2C%20greatly%20aided%20Walpole%5Cs%20corrupt%20efforts.%20As%20requested%20by%20Walpole%2C%20George%20I%20created%20a%20new%20order%20of%20chivalry%2C%20The%20Most%20Honourable%20Order%20of%20the%20Bath.%20Walpole%20rewarded%20political%20supporters%20and%20bribed%20others%20by%20offering%20them%20membership%20of%20the%20prestigious%20organisation.%20Walpole%20thus%20became%20extremely%20powerful%3B%20he%2C%20not%20the%20King%2C%20truly%20controlled%20the%20government.%20Walpole%20was%20allowed%20to%20choose%20and%20remove%20all%20ministers%3B%20George%20I%20merely%20rubber-stamped%20his%20decisions.%20George%20I%20did%20not%20even%20attend%20meeting Alexius would only consent to return on his father solemnly swearing, that if he came back he should not be punished in the least, but cherished as a son and allowed to live quietly on his estates and marry Afrosina. All this was done to terrorize the reactionaries and isolate the tsarevich.

In April 1718 fresh confessions were extorted from Alexius. Yet even now there were no actual facts to go upon. The worst that could be brought against him was that he had wished his father's death. In the eyes of Peter, his son was now a self-convicted and most dangerous traitor, whose life was forfeit. But there was no getting over the fact that his father had sworn to pardon him and let him live in peace if he returned to Russia.
