Alf Clausen Scores High with "The Simpsons" – by Jon Burlingame (838 words)
The 400th episode of the series was an event marked both by a celebratory cake for the musicians and by the presentation of a plaque to Clausen by American Federation of Musicians Local 47 president Hal Espinosa.
Clausen's success with The Simpsons stems from his original interview with creator Matt Groening, who told him that the show was "not a cartoon, but a drama where the characters are drawn," and that he wanted the music to reflect that.
Clausen, who had scored many hours of other shows from Moonlighting to ALF ("no relation," he's quick to say), understood the mandate and has had the job ever since.
The Simpsons Archive: Alf Clausen Interview (April 1998) (804 words)
Clausen is seated at the mixing console during the “10,” a break for the 35-piece orchestra that enables him to review the music he has recorded and decide if any changes should be made.
Clausen has just three hours to record 29 separate pieces of music that range from four seconds to 63 seconds in length and ultimately will form the score for episode 5F14, a sendup of the IRS.
Clausen says he and his team (which includes orchestrator Dell Hake, music editors Chris Ledesma and Bob Beecher, and scoring mixer Rick Riccio) “have to work so hard, so fast, that we don’t even get a chance to breathe,” much less assess their contribution to the cultural impact the series has had over the years.
