Alfonso Ugarte (born 13 July 1847, died ?) was a Peruvian hero of the War of the Pacific, between Peru and Bolivia against Chile. He rose to the rank of Colonel. Alfonso Ugarte was born in Tarapacá, the son of rich tarapaqueños retailers Don Narciso Ugarte and Doña Rosa Vernal. At early age, he was sent by his parents to the Chilean port of Valparaiso where he was educated, finishing his studies in 1868. On his return to Peru he settled in Iquique where he administered the family businesses. At the beginning of the War of the Pacific, Ugarte decided to organize a battalion with its own money. The battalion would be formed of workers and craftsmen of Iquique. This battalion was named "Battalion Iquique N° 1", and consisted of 429 men and 36 officials. He participated in the Battle of Tarapaca where he was hurt. In Arica it participated in the two military meetings that Colonel Francisco Bolognesi held, where the agreement was taken to defend the bastion "until burning the last cartridge". Francisco Bolognesi was a Peruvian military hero. ...


He died fighting in Arica. History indicates romantically that "it was sent from the top of the bastion to avoid that the Chilean troops seize the National Pavilion". It was not thus, but represents the heroism with which he fought defending the Peruvian national honor.

The Chileans won the battle and Coronel Bolognesi was killed.
Some other high ranking Peruvian officers who also perished were Colonel Alfonso Ugarte (who purportedly jumped off the cliff on his horse to mislead pursuing Chilean troops down into the underlying Pacific ocean), and Colonel Mariano Bustamante, his Chief of Detail.
These three Peruvian officers belonged to the group that on the eve of the battle had gallantly rejected an offer to surrender the garrison to the Chilean army, and prompted Colonel Bolognesi to vow to the Chilean emissary that he was to defend the garrison to the last shot.
