Alford is a town located in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 399.


History

Alford was first settled in 1740 and was officially incorporated in 1773.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.9 km˛ (11.6 mi˛). 29.9 km˛ (11.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 399 people, 171 households, and 114 families residing in the town. The population density is 13.3/km˛ (34.5/mi˛). There are 279 housing units at an average density of 9.3/km˛ (24.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 99.00% White, 0.75% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 171 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 41.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $49,632, and the median income for a family is $62,344. Males have a median income of $47,083 versus $28,929 for females. The per capita income for the town is $40,412. 4.1% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
