Alfred is a town located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,497. It is the county seat of York County⁶.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 72.3 km² (27.9 mi²). 70.6 km² (27.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,497 people, 996 households, and 682 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.4/km² (91.7/mi²). There are 1,103 housing units at an average density of 15.6/km² (40.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.52% White, 0.24% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 996 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.88.
