Background

Alfred Ashford was born as a product of Alexander Ashford's "Code: Veronica" project, an attempt to create an offspring with a level of intelligence on par with Veronica Ashford, the first master of the Ashford clan. He was born in 1971, along with a twin sister named Alexia. Of the two, Alexia was the only one to possess the great intelligence Alexander had sought to create. 1971 (MCMLXXI) was a common year starting on Friday (the link is to a full 1971 calendar). ...

Alfred and Alexia had a very close relationship as they grew up and spent large amounts of time together. Alfred's love for his sister eventually developed into obsession and, later in his life, drove him to insanity. In 1983, at the age of 12, Alfred and Alexia learned the truth about their birth after discovering Alexander's secret lab within the Ashford's Antarctic facility. Upset about the revelation, he decided to use his father as a guinea pig for Alexia's T-Veronica experiment. The experiment was considered a failure, with Alexander turning into a mindless monster (later codenamed Nosferatu). As a result, Alexia was forced to inject herself with T-Veronica and was put to cryogenic sleep in order to properly develop the virus from within. Alfred was forced to live without his sister for the next fifteen years. 1983 (MCMLXXXIII) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. ... In 1993, Alfred graduated from an university in England and took over both the Rockfort Island's Military Training Facility and the Antarctic Research Facility, as the supreme leader. He ruled over the island as a complete dictator, in a form of a stalinist control; torturing and killing prisoners of any who oppsed his rule, as well as decorating his facility with all sorts of military paraphernalia. Around this time, he developed a multiple personality disorder, in due to the pain of being separated from Alexia for such an extended time; his mind fractured into two pieces, one which embodied Alfred's psyche, and another which mimicked Alexia's warped mind. 1993 (MCMXCIII) was a common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar and marked the Beginning of the International Decade to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination (1993-2003). ... In 1998, after Albert Wesker's forces attacked Rockfort Island, the T-Virus was unleashed over the island, turning the soldiers from both Umbrella's and Wesker's sides into zombies. During the ensuing confusion, Claire Redfield (who was recently imprisoned) took the opportunity to escape. Alfred tried to hunt down Claire, believing she was a spy under the employ of the ones who attacked the island. Claire would also overhear conversations between Alfred and his "Alexia" personality, believing that they were two different individuals. When Claire (along with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside) attempted to escape from the island (after finding out about Alfred's split personality), Alfred attempted to stop them, first by releasing an experimental Tyrant model (delivered to him earlier by HUNK) and later, by taking control of their escape plane, forcing them to crash land into the Antarctic facility. 1998 (MCMXCVIII) was a common year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar, and was designated the International Year of the Ocean. ... Alfred confronted the two within the Antarctic facility for the last time. While attempting to shoot Claire with his sniper rifle, he was instead shot back in retaliation by Steve and fell into a large gap. Alfred died from his injuries shortly afterwards, but not before awakening the real Alexia from her cryogenic sleep.
