Alfred Hrdlicka [ˌalfʁeːt ˈhʁdlɪtʃka] (born 27 February 1928 in Vienna) is an Austrian sculptor, draughtsman, painter and artist of Czech origin. His surname is sometimes written Hrdlička. After learning to be a dental technician from 1943 to 1945, Hrdlicka studied painting until 1952 at the Akademie der bildenden Künste under Albert Paris Gütersloh and Josef Dobrowsky. Afterwards he studied sculpture until 1957 under Fritz Wotruba. In 1960 he had his first exhibition in Vienna; in 1964 he attained international attention as a representative of Austria on the Biennale exhibition in Venice. On the occasion of Alfred Hrdlicka's 75th birthday,GALERIE ERNST HILGER is showing selected works on the subject of portrait art.
A number of small bronzes from different cycles, such as "Schubert" or "Wagner", as well as large-scale sculptures, such as the portrait of "Giordano Bruno", are shown.

Alfred Hrdlicka was born in Vienna and studied painting with Gütersloh and Dobrowsky, and sculpture with Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Hrdlicka first exhibited his works in Vienna in 1960 and rapidly made a name for himself as an artist of international standing.
Hrdlicka designed some sensational stage sets for Faust I and Faust II in Bonn (1982), for Intolleranza for the Stuttgart State Opera (1992), King Lear in the Cologne Schauspielhaus (1994) and recently for Der Ring des Nibelungen for the Meiningen Theatre (2001).
