A daughter of Bahauddin Toukan, former Jordanian ambassador to the Court of St James, she was born in Cairo, Egypt. She married the king on December 24, 1972, and was titled Queen Alia al Hussein. They had two children of their own, and adopted a daughter. She died in a helicopter crash in Amman, Jordan, and Amman airport was afterwards renamed Queen Alia International Airport.

Jamal Yousef, Director of the Princess Alia Bint AlHussein Center for Special Education in Baqa’a camp in the presence of H.R.H. Princess Alia Bint Al-Hussein and officials from Department of Palestinian Affairs of Jordan.
Princess Alia Bint AlHussein Center for Special Education was established in 1974 to serve around 130 students whose ages range between 6 and 21 years old, for it is the only center in the Baqa’s camp for the mentally handicapped.
Hussein is a common Middle Eastern name especially among Shiite Muslims, because of the popularity of Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of Muhammad and the Shi'ites' third Imam.
