Alibori is the largest and northernmost départements of Benin, with an area of 25,683 km² and a population of 355,950 (2003). The departement is subdivided into 6 communes, each centered at one of the principal towns: Banikoara, Gogounou, Kandi, Karimama, Malanville, and Segbana. The département was created in 1999 when it was split off from Borgou. The seat of the administration isn't defined yet, however it is very likely it will be located in Kandi.

It is characterised by the predominance of small farming units ranging on average from 0.5 hectares in the southern part to 0.2 hectares in the northern part.
There are some 90,000 horse-drawn carriages, 86% of which are installed in the departments of Borgou and Alibori (North) and 13% in Atacora/Donga (Northwest).
The archaic nature of production, the non-payment in time of credits to producers, the poor commercialisation of products and the land policy are few of the many evils that still undermine the development of agriculture in Benin.
