Did Our Sun Capture Alien Worlds? (1006 words)
The study, which used a supercomputer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was published in the Dec. 2 issue of the journal Nature by physicist Ben Bromley of the University of Utah and astronomer Scott Kenyon of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass.
Between 30 and 50 astronomical units from the sun - that is, 2.8 billion to 4.7 billion miles from the sun - several Kuiper belt objects larger than 600 miles in diameter are known to orbit the sun.
The Kuiper belt ends abruptly at 50 astronomical units from the sun and "there is no evidence that the hard edge of the Kuiper belt is in any sense natural," says Bromley.
Partial Solar Eclipse, This Christmas - Alien Soup (520 words)
About 72 percent of the sun's diameter will appear darkened from remote regions of northern Canada at the maximum phase of the eclipse, which comes at 12:35 p.m.
The eclipse magnitude, or percent of the sun's diameter covered by the moon, will vary over the continental United States from more than 60 percent in the northeast to under 20 percent in the extreme southwest.
It was an annular eclipse, in which case the moon darkens most of the sun but leaves a "ring of fire" around the edges.
