All India Services are the supreme civil administrative services of India. There are three All India Services

The recruitment to these Services is made through the Union Public Service Commission on the basis of annual Competitive Examination of a very high standard and that the members of these Services are supposed to be free from political control contented and have a sense of security. The Indian Administrative Service (IAS), also called the Steel frame of India, was born out of the need to have a strong administrative network to assist the executive arm of the Government in implementing its policies and decisions effectively. ... The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of three All India Services of the Government of India; others being the Indian Administrative Service and Indian Foreign Service. ... The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) was established in September 1783 under the British Raj to conduct business with foreign European powers. ... The Union Public Service Commission UPSCis a constitutional body in India to conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the Union. ...


The All India Services Act, 1951 empowers the Government of India to make, after consultation with the State Governments, rules for the regulation of recruitment and conditions of service of the persons appointed to an All India Service.


At present there are 24 cadres each in the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Forest Service and the Indian Police Service.
