Encyclopedia > All Ordinaries

Established in January 1980, the All Ordinaries (colloquially, the "All Ords") is the oldest index of shares in Australia, so called because it contains nearly all ordinary (or common) shares listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). The market capitalization of the companies included in the All Ords index amounts to over 95% of the value of all shares listed on the ASX. The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) is the primary stock exchange in Australia. ...

When established, the All Ords had a base index of 500 - this means that if the index is currently at 5000 points, the value of stocks in the All Ords has increased ten fold since January of 1980.

As of early 2007, the All Ords index is at ~5500.

As a rule ordinary jurisdiction is territorial as well as personal, as in the case of the pope and the bishops; but ordinary jurisdiction may be restricted to certain persons, exempt from the local authority.
Local ordinaries being unable personally to perform all acts of their jurisdiction may and even ought to communicate it permanently to certain persons, without however, divesting themselves of their authority; if the duties of these persons are specified and determined by law, they also are ordinaries, but in a restricted and inferior sense.
