The album was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto on June 11th, 12th and 13th during their 2112 tour. The track "Limelight" from their later album Moving Pictures includes the line "All the world's truly a stage and we are merely players" which, along with the title of this album, are a tribute of sorts to Shakespeare's "As You Like It". According to the liner notes, this live album marks the end of the "First chapter of Rush," and would mark the start of a trend of releasing a live album after each four studio album cycle. Songs like "Bastille Day" and "Anthem" are similar to their studio versions, but Neil Peart's first official drum solo to be featured on a live album was featured at the end of "Working Man."
