The album was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto on June 11th, 12th and 13th during their 2112 tour. The track "Limelight" from their later album Moving Pictures includes the line "All the world's truly a stage and we are merely players" which, along with the title of this album, are a tribute of sorts to Shakespeare's "As You Like It". According to the liner notes, this live album marks the end of the "First chapter of Rush," and would mark the start of a trend of releasing a live album after each four studio album cycle. Songs like "Bastille Day" and "Anthem" are similar to their studio versions, but Neil Peart's first official drum solo to be featured on a live album was featured at the end of "Working Man." All the World's a Stage would be Rush's first US Top 40 charting album and would go Gold alongside A Farewell to Kings and 2112 on November 16, 1977. Then All the World's was certified Platinum in 1981 after the release of Moving Pictures. Mike Myers' brother can be heard on the album screaming his band name at the time "Nighthawk" On "Bastille Day".[citation needed]

Remaster Details

A remaster was issued in 1997.

  • The tray has a picture of star with man painting with THE RUSH REMASTERS printed in all caps just to the left. All remasters from Rush through to Permanent Waves are like this. This is just like the cover art of Retrospective I.
  • The original CD left off "What You're Doing" due to time constraints (CDs could only hold 75 minutes at the time), but by the time the remasters came out, CDs could hold 80 minutes, and thus "What You're Doing" was reinserted.
  • The album's original triple gatefold with concert pictures was reinstated on the remaster.
