A son of Ludwik Starski- famous screenwriter and popular songd writer (such as "Zapomniana melodia" and "Piętro wyżej"). In 1969 he graduated architecture at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (pol. Akademia Sztuk Pięknych). His first work as production designer was a film by Ryszard Bera "Chłopcy" (Boys) in 1973. Starski was working with famous Polish Oscar and Palme D'Ore winning director Andrzej Wajda.
