Doyle attended Norwich University. Exceptionally for a future leading professional, despite winning numerous amateur titles, he did not turn pro until he was 46. In 1995 he won three times on the second tier Nike Tour. He became eligible to play on the Senior PGA Tour when he turned fifty in July 1998, and quickly found success, winning four official money events in 1999 including one the Senior PGA Championship, which is one of the senior majors. In 2001 he won his second senior major, the Senior Players Championship, and topped the Seniors Tour money list.
