It lies about 3 miles south east of the city centre. It has a number of large houses in the prestigious Calderstones Park area, with Victorian working class terraces around the shopping area of Allerton Road. There are 2 secondary schools, New Hays and Calderstones. Allerton railway station is actually in nearby Garston: Mossley Hill and West Allerton are closer to Allerton itself.

Dismantled in 1974, the Lost Garden was several miles away from the rest of the formal gardens and was Allerton’s favorite picnic spot.
