History

The airline was established and started operations in early August 2002 when Brisbane-based Queensland Airline Holdings (made up of Steve Padgett from Aeromil, Airwork's Hugh Jones and Lloyd Helicopters' Stephen Bond) acquired the assets of the dormant Flight West Airlines, which had been established on 25 May 1987 and was liquidated in 2000. They called the new airline Alliance Airlines to reflect their philosophy of working closely with the travel industry and their aviation partners. Alliance had wet leasing contracts with Norfolk Jet Express, until that airline was liquidated on 4 June 2005. For the first week after liquidation, Alliance were used for services, but it was planned that Qantas would operate the flights from 11 June using Air Nauru aircraft.
