Encyclopedia > Allied Artists Pictures Corporation

Allied Artists Pictures Corporation This subsidiary of Monogram Pictures was founded in 1946. AAPC was responsible for the production of higher-budget films while Monogram continued to produce "B" movies (see "B pictures"). Monogram became known as Allied Artists in 1953 but was not successful until the production and release of "Tickle Me" starring Elvis Presley (1965). Although the corporation was able to produce such films as "Papillon" and "The Man Who Would Be King," it met with financial catastrophe in 1979 filing for bankruptcy. Lorimar Productions purchased the former Allied Artists Pictures Corporation in 1980.

Allied Artists upheld an Ohio statute prohibiting the practices of “blind selling” and “blind bidding,” which involve the licensing of a motion picture without affording an exhibitor the opportunity to view the film.
In Allied Artists, the distributors attacked the statute on federal constitutional grounds, claiming that the law violated the First Amendment and placed an undue burden on interstate commerce in violation of the commerce clause.
As a result of Allied Artists and cases in other jurisdictions that subsequently followed it, all distributors of motion pictures must adhere to the procedures for licensing films set forth in the statutes that are controlling in 26 jurisdictions.
