The Allied Military Government for Occupied Territories (AMGOT) was the form of military rule administered by Allied forces during and after World War II within European territories they occupied. This form of controlled government was implemented in the states of Germany, Italy, Belgium and Austria, amongst others. Germany's control was notably divided amongst the powers of the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. This form of government would have been implemented in France after its liberation as well if not for General Charles de Gaulle establishing control of the country in the name of Free French Forces. Occupiedterritories is a term used by advocates who assert that a region has been taken over illegitimately by a sovereign power (compare disputed area).
The West Bank (current), and the Gaza Strip (until 2005), are often referred to as the occupiedterritories, however their status was, and for the West Bank continues to be, disputed.
Under (1), the territory in question is under normal civilian law; under (2) the territory is usually under military law within the terms of the Laws of war, such as the Fourth Geneva Convention (according to the UN).
