Alliston, Ontario is an Ontario community just about 90 kilometers NNW from Toronto, and about 40 km SW of Barrie, about 18 km W of Cookstown, about 10 km N of Tottenham, about 40 km NE of Orangeville and about 30 km E of Shelburne. It is part of the Town of New Tecumseth which is part of Simcoe County. (The 1991 amalgamation of Alliston, nearby villages Beeton and Tottenham, and the Township of Tecumseth, created one legal municipality, the Town of New Tecumseth. Municipal offices for the Town are located in Alliston.) The heart of the community is divided by Ontario Highway 89. It was founded in 1847 by English immigrant William Fletcher. The town grew as a commercial centre for the area farmers and was best known as a potato-growing area. It is still a major industry in the town and is celebrated by the annual Alliston Potato Festival. A large Honda car manfacturing plant, the biggest industry in Simcoe County , is located to the southeast of Alliston, along the Tottenham Road (Simcoe Road 10); less than 1 km south of Highway 89. The surrounding area is made up of farmlands to its east and the south along with the north and west. The forests lie to the northwest, the southwest, the south and to the east along with rolling hills. The town as two parks- Riverdale Park to the north along the Boyne River and PPG Park to the south, by the local fire department. Major residential areas are located to the north (as Previn Court Homes) and to the south, with additional residential and commercial developments made since then in the northwest (as "Alliston West"), north and southwest since the mid-1990s, with future developments expected in the future that could raise the population from 17,000 to 20,000. The urban area stretches from west to east , is nearly 3 km, and from north to south ranges from 300 m, 600 m to 1 km. Another residential area, adjacent to the Nottawasaga Inn are located 5 km east of Alliston- the first phase built is known as Green Briar; the second phase, to the west of the Inn is known as Briar Hill. The Nottawasaga River is situated east of the town; the Boyne River, which runs through Alliston, joins the Nottawasaga, just downstream from Nicolston Dam. The CP rail (Toronto - Parry Sound - Sudbury) runs to its east with a small freight yard for Honda vehicles. Many other business thrive today in Alliston.
