She is 2.08 metres (6 ft 10 in), making her one of the tallest female basketball players in the country and the tallest player in Michigan State history as well as one of the tallest female athletes in the world in general. Because of her great height, DeHann is positioned as a center. She is a versatile big player and has good, fluid movement on the court, allowing her to make good use of her height. She can control a game with scoring, rebounding and excellent shot blocking. She has claimed to even perform a two-handed dunk.

Early life

DeHaan's athletic life actually began with gymnastics in preschool. She also tried ballet, ice skating, swimming, tee ball and volleyball before she ever picked up a basketball in fifth grade. When some parents of AAU players walked into the gym and saw her doing gymnastics, they asked her to join their basketball team to which DeHann agreed. DeHann has always been tall. In middle school, she had already reached 6ft 2 and she grew six more inches between her sixth- and seventh-grade years. She grew to 6ft 7 as a high school sophomore and graduated from Grandville High School at taller than 6ft 8. She wasn't finished, adding another inch during the summer to become the tallest player in Michigan State history at 6ft 9.


Allyssa now towers over parents, even though her father, Brandon DeHann, is 6ft 6in, and her mother, Tracie DeHann, is 6ft 4in. She played basketball at in the early 1980s and faced some of the game's biggest legends, including Cheryl Miller and Anne Donovan. Allyssa's younger but no longer smaller brother, Collin DeHaan, is 6-ft 11. He grew 10 inches in two years, and doctors say he could hit over 7 feet tall before his growth spurt ends. High school and college

Allyssa attended Grandville High school. On November 28, 2005 she was named the Michigan Miss Basketball of 2005. DeHaan ranks second on the team in scoring points and was a big help in keeping her team on track and played a crucial role in guiding the squad to its first 3-0 mark in conference play since 1991 despite her rookie status. DeHaan later attended Michigan State University and had one of the most dominant freshman seasons in Big Ten history. In her first season, DeHann had earned spots on the All-Big Ten Second Team and the All-Big Ten Defensive Team, as well as the Big Ten All-Tournament Team. She smashed the school's previous single-season blocks record of 57 set by Kristen Rasmussen's in only 12 games and her 69 blocks during Big Ten regular-season games was the third-best mark in the school's history, just 27 points behind Trish Andrew's mark of 96 set in 1991 - 1992 season. She has also earned the distinction of becoming only the fourth person in Michigan State University's history to reach 300 points and 200 rebounds. DeHann has learned a lot about playing in the national spotlight, especially when the she and her took on defending NCAA champion Maryland in front of 12,295 fans at the Terrapins' Comcast Center as countless others who watched the nationally televised game on CBS. Maryland standout Crystal Langhorne proved too much for DeHaan and the Spartans. DeHaan is continually learning how to deal with the travails of facing physical, up-tempo Division-I opponents. Over the summer, she worked on her strength and added 30 pounds to her long and lanky frame. Since the season ended, she has continued to add strength, as well as another inch in height, and now weighs over 200 pounds.
