Alpha Centauri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1194 words)
Alpha Centauri A is also known as HD 128620, HR 5459, CP-60°5483, GCTP 3309.00A, and LHS 50.
It consists of two main stars, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B (which form a binary star together) at a distance of 4.36 ly, and a dimmer red dwarf named Proxima Centauri at a distance of 4.22 ly.
The closest neighbours to the Alpha Centauri system are the Sun and Barnard's star (1.98 pc or 6.47 ly), which is also the next nearest star from Earth, at a distance of 5.96 ly.
eSky: Alpha Centauri (859 words)
Alpha Centauri is a star of the southern sky, and is not visible to observers at a latitude greater than about 25° north (roughly the latitude of Florida, Egypt or Taiwan).
Beyond the A and B stars, there is a third component in the system: Alpha Centauri C. This is a tiny, faint red dwarf orbiting the two main stars at an immense distance: roughly one fifth of a light year.
Alpha Centauri - famous as the nearest visible star to the Sun - represents the foot of the Centaur, and falls near the southern and eastern borders of that constellation, on the fringes of Circinus.
