Founding The Fraternity considers the Morrill Act of 1862 to be the instrument of its inception. Having been signed by President Lincoln in 1862, it provided land and other financial supports to establish one institution of higher learning in the agricultural and mechanical sciences within each state. Alpha Gamma Rho, referred to as "AGR", was founded when two local fraternities from Ohio State University (Alpha Gamma Rho, founded 1904) and the University of Illinois (Delta Rho Sigma, founded in 1906) met at an International Livestock Competition in Chicago. Sixteen men originally signed the Fraternity's charter at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis on April 4, 1908. Expansion increased dramatically over the next 3 decades to almost all land-grant universities in the country. The first chapter at a non-land-grant university was chartered in 1959 at University of Arizona. The National Fraternity has expanded to many smaller agricultural colleges and departments in the last 45 years as a measure to increase its membership and influence in agricultural communities. Its members typically pursue agricultural careers upon completion of college, but many have gone on to have careers in other natural sciences, education, economics, law, medicine, and politics. The most-recognized alumnus from Alpha Gamma Rho is Orville Redenbacher. Other famous alumni include Dr. Walter Clore, the father of Washington Wine. Clore also served as president of the Π Chapter of ΑΓΡ at Oklahoma State. The Morrill Land-Grant Acts are pieces of US legislation which allowed for the creation of land-grant colleges, which would be funded by the grant of federally-controlled land to each of the states which had stayed with the United States during the American Civil War. ...

Guiding Values Purpose To make better men, and through them a broader and better agriculture by surrounding our members with influences tending to encourage individual endeavor, resourcefulness and aggressive effort along lines making for the development of better mental, social, moral, and physical qualities; to promote a wider acquaintance and a broader outlook on the part of agricultural men through fellowship in a national organization that stands for the best social, mental, and moral development.
Vision To be the premier fraternity building values, skills and relationships for lifelong personal and professional success in the food, fiber and life sciences industry.
Values Essential and enduring tenants of inherit value to Alpha Gamma Rho and its members. 1. Exemplary personal character and ethical conduct 2. Commitment to academic excellence 3. Commitment to interpersonal growth and management experiences resulting from group living 4. Lifelong relationships, commitment and support among collegiate members and alumni 5. Quality membership growth and diversity of membership representing all eligible men 6. Caring, capable, and committed advisers, alumni, and housemothers 7. Sound financial management at the personal, chapter, and national fraternity levels 8. Local responsibility and control with proactive national direction and standards 9. Professional leadership to support the food/fiber and life sciences industry
Brotherhood Brotherhood Program The Brotherhood Program is designed to eliminate the possibility of hazing. It is an enlightened plan that will continue the tradition of leadership every Brother has come to expect from Alpha Gamma Rho. The elements of the program are embodied in the four cornerstones of our Fraternity. The Brotherhood Program was adopted after considerable thought and effort. Elements of the program have been in effect in some Chapters for many years. The Brotherhood Program has been further refined and strengthened since it was first adopted in 1992. Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity was founded in 1904, and grew from the hearts and minds of men who believed in the inherent values found in American agriculture: respect for our neighbors and commitment to doing what’s right. This legacy helped convince the AGR National Board of Directors to adopt the Brotherhood Program. The Brotherhood Program has since propelled Alpha Gamma Rho to new heights. It’s helped the Fraternity attain stature never before achieved by any fraternal organization. How? By attracting and retaining the finest quality men available.
Four Pillars Four pillars The four fundamental elements of the Brotherhood Program are the four pillars of our Fraternity, as laid by our founders: recruitment, commitment, education, and recognition.
Four Parameters 1) No more pledging. 2) If it’s required of a freshman, it must be required of a senior. 3) No more dominant/subservient relationship. 4) Rewards must be based on objective criteria and must not encourage class division.
