The town is situated on the banks of the river Old Rhine, between Leiden and Utrecht. The municipality covers an area of 57.68 km² (of which 2.62 km² water). It also contains the remnants of a Roman fort, called a castellum. The city is located in what is called the 'Green Heart' of the Netherlands, which is a greenbelt separating Utrecht, Amsterdam and The Hague.


Over the past five years, a large part of the town center is undergoing a full urban renewal. Many older buildings built in the 1950s and earlier were demolished to make place for modern architecture. This masterplan which is in its final phase of completion includes the addition of a new public square next to the riverbank, the construction of a performing arts theatre/cinema, an upgrade of local shops and the creation of pedestrian streets. The Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) is a branch of the Rhine delta in the Dutch provinces of Utrecht and South Holland.
The city of Utrecht was founded at a ford near the fork of river Kromme Rijn into the Vecht to the north, and the Oude Rijn to the west.
Many of the cities and villages along the Oude Rijn are of Roman origin, stemming from border-guarding castella and castra.
