Alpine is a city located in Brewster County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,786. It is the county seat of Brewster County6.

Alpine is home to the main campus of Sul Ross State University.

Geography

Alpine is located at 30°21'39" North, 103°39'56" West (30.360718, _103.665418)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km˛ (4.1 mi˛). 10.6 km˛ (4.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,786 people, 2,429 households, and 1,435 families residing in the city. The population density is 547.5/km˛ (1,416.5/mi˛). There are 2,852 housing units at an average density of 269.9/km˛ (698.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 79.19% White, 1.33% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 15.45% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 50.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,429 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,979, and the median income for a family is $31,658. Males have a median income of $27,720 versus $19,575 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,587. 20.9% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.3% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
