alt.romath is a Usenet newsgroup created by Merle Elaine Matthews (aka "Tach'ara Ch'lan Romath"), who is a Canadian nurse and a born againChristian as a location for her to conduct investigations of people who had posted messages she described as spam or pornography to usenet. Critics of the initial creation of the group alleged that it was an exercise in vanity. The newsgroup was inundated with contributors to the Meow Wars in 1999. Participants in the self-styled "invasion" proclaimed themselves "Romathians." At one point, alt.romath had the largest monthly unique plain-text message count throughout the entire alt.* usenet hierarchy. Following the departure from Usenet of a majority of the Romathians, alt.romath fell into disuse. It has become more active lately, as Matthews and her friends have begun posting again.
