History

In the 17th century Alta Gracia was as a big ranch operated by the Jesuits. Along with other ranches, including Caroya, Jesús María, Santa Catalina, La Candelaria y San Ignacio de los Ejercicios, Alta Gracia was founded to economically support the Collegium Maximum or "Colegio Máximo", one of Argentina's first universities (Universitas Cortuba Tucumaæ) today: UNC, and other educational institutes that are now part of the "Manzana Jesuítica", an important center in Córdoba City. Alta Gracia's main economic activity during that period was agriculture. The city of Alta Gracia was the centre of an important aboriginal settlement, and the grounds over which was raised one of the most important Jesuit ranches of the Province with the name of Estancia Jesuitica de Alta Gracia.
On January 1900 the Provincial Government established the Municipality and, on June of 1940, Alta Gracia was acknowledged with the status of 'City'.
The Alta Gracia Stream flows across the City, forming a lot of broad beaches where the visitor will be able to walk by, rest upon, or maybe to enjoy making a picnic under the shades of its ancient trees.
