Altamont is a village located in Daviess County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 218.


Geography

Altamont is located at 39°53'17" North, 94°5'19" West (39.888009, _94.088624)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 218 people, 83 households, and 60 families residing in the village. The population density is 323.7/km˛ (847.6/mi˛). There are 93 housing units at an average density of 138.1/km˛ (361.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 99.54% White, 0.00% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 83 households out of which 37.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 27.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.20.


In the village the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $26,250, and the median income for a family is $32,500. Males have a median income of $24,375 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $9,953. 21.7% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Altamont, the "City of Plain", was laid out in Mound Township, the richest and best township in Effingham County - being mostly prairies and farm ground - slightly rolling along the streams, Big Creek, Coon Creek and Second Creek.
The name Altamont, like the name Mound Township, was bestowed upon it by J.W. Conlogue because of the elevation or "mound" which lies to the northwest.
