Altamont is a census-designated place located in Klamath County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 19,603.


Geography

Altamont is located at 42°12'9" North, 121°43'35" West (42.202625, _121.726439)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.6 km˛ (8.7 mi˛). 22.6 km˛ (8.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,603 people, 7,777 households, and 5,420 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 868.0/km˛ (2,248.5/mi˛). There are 8,315 housing units at an average density of 368.2/km˛ (953.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.65% White, 0.64% African American, 3.52% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 2.82% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. 6.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,777 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,831, and the median income for a family is $37,715. Males have a median income of $31,229 versus $22,495 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,957. 13.7% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
