In 1928, Western Electric, pioneer in providing audio equipment for the then rising motion picture industry (these were the years of The Jazz Singer) founded a dedicated research center called "ERPI" (Electric Research Products, Inc.). In the 1930s Altec Lansing spun off from ERPI, as the All Technical Products Company. In 1941 they acquired Lansing Manufacturing Company (named after its head James B. Lansing) and melded the two names (All Tech & Lansing) into Altec Lansing Corporation. The first Altec Lansing power amplifier, Model 142B, was born in the same year.
