The reason for the station's construction is a mystery, since it pre-dates the hotel/lodge 1 mile to the south - the only obvious source of trade. It was however formerly a passing place and had a water-tank for the locomotives, so may have been established for purely operational reasons. (On the Settle-Carlisle railway Blea Moor Signal Box was created in similar isolation for logistical reasons, and still operates thus today)
