Alton is a suburban community or a town located east about 70 km NW of Toronto and about 5 km S of Orangeville on the old highway linking Orangeville and Guelph Road which is bypassed to the south and east. Alton is located in the northern part of the incorporated town of Caledon in the Regional Municipality of Peel. When the Orangeville By-Pass opened in the northeast, Highway 24 moved from Alton to south and east on Charleston Sideroad and Hurontario Street (Highway 10) and the number was renamed Highway 136 or Main Street. Alton has a train station on the CP railway, although no longer used for passenger traffic it is a short line used for terminating north in nearby Orangeville. Forests are situated to the west. It is located on the top of the Niagara Escarpment and is surrounded by wooded hills and some farmland. Alton is NE of Guelph and W of Newmarket.
