Altoona is a town located in Blount County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 984.


Geography

Altoona is located at 34°1'45.332" North, 86°19'14.473" West (34.029259, _86.320687)1.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.9 km² (3.8 mi²). 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.26% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 984 people, 397 households, and 271 families residing in the town. The population density is 100.0/km² (258.7/mi²). There are 437 housing units at an average density of 44.4/km² (114.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.43% White, 2.54% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 397 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.89.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 78.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $20,469, and the median income for a family is $28,750. Males have a median income of $30,250 versus $22,344 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,168. 27.2% of the population and 21.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.3% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
