Amanda Jane "Milly" Dowler (June 25, 1988March 21, 2002) was a British schoolgirl who was murdered on the way home from school in Walton-on-Thames. Her disappearance in March 2002, followed by the discovery of her remains six months later, resulted in nationwide media attention, a huge police investigation (Operation Ruby) involving over 100 officers at its peak and numerous tributes. The British police received over 6,000 telephone calls, questioned over 2,800 people and made 120 searches. Despite the vast attention to the case, no one has been charged with her murder as of 2006.[1] June 25 is the 176th day of the year (177th in leap years) in the Gregorian Calendar, with 189 days remaining. ... 1988 (MCMLXXXVIII) was a leap year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar. ... Disappearance

At 3 p.m. on March 21, 2002, Dowler left Heathside School for home on the train. She got off at Walton-on-Thames railway station to visit a café with friends, one stop early from her usual exit of Hersham. After phoning her father at 3.47 p.m. to tell him she would be home in half an hour, she set off for home on foot, and was last seen a quarter of an hour later walking along Station Approach.[2] A nationwide search followed the disappearance, including 100 officers and helicopters searching the fields, streets and rivers around Hersham. Detectives who had worked on the abduction of Sarah Payne were called in to help.[3] Police and Dowler's family made a massive appeal for information, including a reconstruction on Crimewatch UK[2], and a plea by pop star Will Young on the ITN news programme; the schoolgirl was a fan and had attended a concert of his the day before her disappearance.[4] The Crimewatch appeal included a direct appeal to Dowler in the hope that she had run away from home of her own accord, though the day before her father had already expressed fears that she had been abducted. Her mother expressed hope that she had indeed run away, but admitted that she could think of no reason why she would want to do so.[5] A week after her disappearance, however, the police stated that she was probably not taken by force, reasoning that at Dowler's age she was unlikely to have gone off with someone she did not know of her own free will, yet despite a number of sightings no-one had come forward who had witnessed a struggle.[6] March 21 is the 80th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar (81st in leap years). ... On April 23, the discovery of a body in the Thames prompted media speculation that the body was that of Dowler; however, the body was identified the following day as 73-year-old Maisie Thomas, who had gone missing over a year ago. Thomas' death was not believed to be suspicious.[7] In June of that year, despite further searches, the offer of a £100,000 reward (approx. $147,000) by national tabloid The Sun[8] and Dowler's parents continuing to text her mobile in the hope of a reply[9], Dowler remained missing and police told her parents that she was probably dead.[10] April 23 is the 113th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar (114th in leap years). ... On September 18, Dowler's skeletal remains were finally discovered at Yateley Heath Forest near Fleet, and confirmed as hers two days later. The discovery of the body led the police to reclassify the case from a missing persons search to a murder investigation. Neither the clothes she was wearing nor the purse, rucksack or mobile phone she had with her at the time of her disappearance were found, and as of 2006 they are still missing.[11][12] September 18 is the 261st day of the year (262nd in leap years). ... As of 2006, despite several arrests no-one has yet been charged with Dowler's murder. The only person to appear in the dock in relation to the case was 21-year-old Lianne Newman from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, who repeatedly phoned Dowler's parents, her school and the police pretending to be the missing schoolgirl. She was jailed in April 2003 for five months after pleading guilty to five counts of making phone calls to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety.[13] Location within the British Isles The Tewkesbury War Memorial, locally known as the Cross Tewkesbury is a historic town in Gloucestershire, England. ...
