Amara Essy (born December 20, 1944) is a diplomat from Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). He was born in the town of Bouake, in Ivory Coast. Served as the President of the Un Security in Council in January 1990.He served as the president of the United Nations General Assembly from 1994 to 1995. He also served as the foreign minister of Ivory Coast from 1990 until 2000. In 2001 he became secretary-general of the Organisation of African Unity and served in that position until July 2002 when the OAU was transformed into the African Union. He then served as interim Chairman of the Commission of the African Union until 2003. AmaraEssy, on Monday September 17, 2001 assumed the leadership of the OAU from Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim at a ceremony held at the General Secretariat of the OAU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Essy and Dr. Salim signed the Handing Over Report comprising of reports from all the departments of the OAU, including the ongoing building construction of the Offices and Conferences Complex and the progress report on the African Union, according to an OAU press release.
AmaraEssy in response stated that he was honored to assume the post of Secretary General and to address such a distinguished audience.
