Peru. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador; on the west by the Ecuador; on the south by the La Libertad region; and on the east by the Loreto and San Martín regions. Its capital is the city of Chachapoyas.


Political division

The region is divided into seven provinces (provincias, singular: provincia), which are composed of 83 districts (distritos, singular: distrito). The provinces, with their capitals in parenthesis, are:

  1. Bagua (Bagua)
  2. Bongará (Villa de Jumbilla)
  3. Chachapoyas (Chachapoyas)
  4. Condorcanqui (Santa María de Nieva)
  5. Luya (Lamud)
  6. Rodríguez de Mendoza (Mendoza)
  7. Utcubamba (Bagua Grande)

The Amazonas region is made up by of rainforest and Sierra (highlands), although the rainforest area is larger and extends northwards up to the border with Ecuador in the top of the Cordillera del Cóndor.
The area of the Amazonas Region was strongly linked to the independence thoughts and actions.
The Cordillera del Condor, located in this region, was the scenery of the war between Peru and Ecuador in 1981.
