Amboy is a city located in Lee County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,561.


Geography

Amboy is located at 41°42'52" North, 89°19'58" West (41.714411, -89.332671)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km˛ (1.3 mi˛). 3.3 km˛ (1.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,561 people, 963 households, and 651 families residing in the city. The population density is 784.8/km˛ (2,035.5/mi˛). There are 1,048 housing units at an average density of 321.1/km˛ (832.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 97.97% White, 0.78% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 963 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $36,250, and the median income for a family is $42,027. Males have a median income of $35,250 versus $26,105 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,183. 8.3% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

James Gregory, who was a foreman in the Illinois Central machine shop, was probably typical of the "Irish railroader." Most of the Irish settled west of the tracks between Main Street and the Green River.
The explanation for the two story building is that once Amboy was headquarters for the Northern Division of the Illinois Central between Centralia and East Dubuque, IL.
