Encyclopedia > Amen Corner (band)

Amen Corner was a successful British pop band, formed in 1966 in Cardiff, Wales. Its members were Andy Fairweather-Low (vocals), Neil Jones (guitar), Allan Jones (tenor saxophone), Blue Weaver (keyboards), Mike Smith (saxophone), Clive Taylor (bass) and Dennis Byron (drums). The group was enormously successful in the UK. "If Paradise Is Half as Nice" went to number one in early 1969. The band split up that year but Fairweather-Low assembled a new short-lived band, Fair Weather, later had success with a solo career in the 70s, notably with the top ten hit "Wide Eyed and Legless", and went on to play guitar with Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Weaver subsequently worked with the Strawbs and the Bee Gees. In the early years interviewers were more concerned with asking where the band got their name from, and didn't ask the questions we'd like to see answered, and nowadays the Floyds themselves hardly care about this period either.
At the end of 1967 the band embarked on a package tour of the UK with Jimi Hendrix and The Move headlining, and supported by Amen Corner, The Nice, The Outer Limits and Eire Apparent.
Following this, the band hoped to keep Syd on as a songwriter, but have Gilmour be their performing guitarist.

Each hole is named after one of the many shrubs, trees or flowers along the course.
The most famous three - No. 11 (white dogwood), No. 12 (golden bell) and No. (Azalea) make up "Amen Corner," a picturesque grave for several championship dreams.
It got the name "Amen Corner" from a magazine article by Herbert Warren Wind, who borrowed the name from an old big band recording, "Shouting at Amen Corner." The real beauty of the course, however, is that virtually every hole forces the golfer to either take a risk or play it safe.
