First ruler of the twelth dynasty (the dynasty debated to be the beginning of the middle kingdom of egpyt) Amenemhet I was not of royal lineage, and hence took measures to assure his authority of kingship. Such including literary works (the Prophercy of Neferti) and the revertion to the pyramid style complexes of the VIth dynasty rulers. Amenemhet I also moved the capital from Thebes to Lisht. His son Senwosret I followed a similar path to Amenemhet by building his pyramid at Lisht to, his son, the next ruler of Egpyt, Amenemhet II did not follow this tradition. Senwosret I pyramid is a closer reflection of the VIth dynasty pryamids then that of Amenemhet I. Amenemhet I and Senwosret I are thought to have shared a joint reign of atleast 10 years, with Amenemhet I celebrating his jubilee (30 years of rule) 1 year after they began their joint reign.
Amenemhet I was the first ruler of the 12th Dynasty, and some Egyptologists believe that recovery from the First Intermediate Period into the Middle Kingdom only really began with his rule.
Amenemhet I's Horus name, Wehem-mesut, means "he who repeats births", and almost certainly was chosen to commemorate the new dynasty and a return to the values and prosperity of a united Egypt.
Amenemhet was probably the son of a woman named Nofret (Nefret), from Elephantine near modern Aswan, and a priest called Senusret, according to an inscription at Thebes.
