The American Council on Alcohol Problems is a federation of state affiliates promoting the reduction of alcohol advertising, availability and consumption. The Council was known as the Anti-Saloon League from 1893 until 1948, the Temperance League until 1950, the national Temperance League until 1964, and now as the American Council on Alcohol Problems. It partners with George Hacker’s Alcohol Policies Project at the Center for Science in the Public Interest and other temperance-oriented groups. A federation (from the Latin fœdus, covenant) is a state comprised of a number of self-governing regions (often themselves referred to as states) united by a central (federal) government. ... In general usage, alcohol (from Arabic al-khwl الكحول, or al-ghawl الغول) refers almost always to ethanol, also known as grain alcohol, and often to any beverage that contains ethanol (see alcoholic beverage). ... Generally speaking, advertising is the paid promotion of goods, services, companies and ideas by an identified sponsor. ... The Anti-Saloon League was the leading organization lobbying for [[prohibition]] in the United States in the early 20th century. ...
