History and Mission

In 1993, Dr. John Lee, a lawyer and professor , together with two other American practitioners of international relations, decided to found a school addressing the needs of graduate students who would work in a world quite different from that of the 20th century.

The dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union had ended an era dominated by ideological values and systematic confrontation that had suppressed and partially hidden cultural and historical cleavages. AGS conducts a cooperative program with the Université de Paris Sud XI, which includes a bilingual dual degree, as well as an exchange of faculty members and of credits, and extends to joint research activities between AGSIRD and the Center for the Analysis of Disputes and their Modes of Settlement (CADMOS).

AGSIRD also has a cooperative agreement with the Law School of the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, France, with an exchange of students and of credits.

The faculty of the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy are international. Its members come from the United States and numerous other countries such as India, Venezuela, Great-Britain, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Iran, Lebanon and Israel. AGSIRD students come from the United States and France as well as from many other countries around the world: Japan, India, China, Senegal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, Mongolia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala to mention just a few.
