Reputedly, the breed started when one hairless puppy appeared in one Rat Terrier litter in the state of Louisiana, United States, in 1972. Edwin and Willie Scott, the owners, liked the bitch's look and temperament, and upon maturity bred her hoping to reproduce the hairless quality. They were eventually successful; a litter produced in 1981 provided the foundation stock of the breed. The first AmericanHairlessTerrier, a female named Josephine, was born in 1972, part of a litter of purebred, coated Rat Terriers.
Upon separation, all of the hairless Rat Terriers and all of their coated descendants, products of careful breeding to the finest coated Rat Terriers, were given the name originally chosen for the breed by Edwin Scott: AmericanHairlessTerrier.
Hairless Variety: Puppies are born with a soft, vestigial down that generally covers the body.
Unlike other hairlessbreeds, such as the Chinese Crested or Xoloitzcuintli who may have hair on the head, feet and tail, the HairlessAmericanTerrier is completely hairless except for whiskers and guard hairs on the muzzle as well as eyebrows.
Hairless puppies are born with a soft down that covers the body but by the time the puppy reaches 6 to 8 weeks, the down should have diminished to the point where the dog is completely hairless.
In the AmericanTerrier the hairless gene is recessive.
