The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, AIChE, (pronounced "AKE ee") was established in 1908, with the purpose of establishing chemical engineers as a profession independent from chemists and mechanical engineers. As of 2005, AIChE had about 40,000 members, many of them from outside of the United States.
