History

In 1986, the California International School (CIS) was established in the Kowloon Tong area. In 2000, the school was renamed American International School. Still, for many years, the school continues its policies in teaching in the Californian system despite calling themselves American International School.

Curricular

Due to the competition of new international schools being built around the area, AIS started to accept more students than before, expanding the school to a bigger community. Other than American teachers, there are also teachers from New Zealand, Australia, Scotland, South Africa, England, France, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, India, Hong Kong, Burma, and Canada. In adapting to the American system, this school demonstrates a good opportunity for students to get into American colleges easier.

Extra-curricular

School pupils compete in tournaments between international schools in Kowloon and Hong Kong; in soccer A/B/C (Boys/Girls), volleyball A/B/C (Girls), basketball A/B/C (Boys) and swimming (Boys/Girls). AIS also is participating in track and field events against schools around the district and also throughout Hong Kong.

In recent years, the volleyball A/B girls teams won the international schools' championships in Hong Kong (ISSF).

A Cultural Fair is held annually in November, and Middle/High school performances are held in February or May.

Houses

AIS had created house activities, creating rivalries in the school in competing in sports-based and academic-based activities. Before the 2003-2004 year, AIS had four houses determined by color: Red, yellow, green, and blue. After 2004, the school started to make house activities more significant, based on homerooms in grades, into three competitive houses with legendary animals and colors coming from the school emblem, as well as the American flag. The three legendary animals are the Blue Dragons, the White Tigers, and the Red Phoenix.

Every year in December, track and field competitions are held for Sports Day in Kowloon Tsai Park.
