Encyclopedia > American Journal of Physics

The American Journal of Physics is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Association of Physics Teachers devoted to the educational and cultural aspects of physics. It is notable for its entertaining and accessible style. Peer review (known as refereeing in some academic fields) is a scholarly process used in the publication of manuscripts and in the awarding of funding for research. ... Nature. ... The word culture, from the Latin colere, with its root meaning to cultivate, generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activity significance. ... Since antiquity, people have tried to understand the behavior of matter: why unsupported objects drop to the ground, why different materials have different properties, and so forth. ...

The Journal was established in 1933; the current editor is Jan Tobochnik. 1933 (MCMXXXIII) was a common year starting on Sunday (link will take you to calendar). ...

Editorial policy for the journal explicitly specifies that the subject matter should be of interest in an eductational setting. The editoral policy states:

  • Contributions should treat subjects of genuine value and interest to physics teachers and students. They should significantly aid the process of learning physics and not be simply a display of cleverness and erudition. Highly specialized contributions are not encouraged. Topics from all fields of physics and neighboring disciplines are appropriate; however, the mere solution of another physical problem, of which there are many, seldom constitutes an acceptable contribution. Manuscripts on topics that largely parallel those already available in textbooks and monographs and that differ from them primarily in the domain of taste rather than coverage are not suitable contributions.
