Formerly, much of American Public Media's programming content was distributed by Public Radio International, which itself was formerly named American Public Radio (Network) until 01 July 1994. The former name of PRI (American Public Radio) and the current branding of APM (American Public Media) are apparently unrelated, despite their similarity. However, APR was formed by Bill Kling to distribute A Prairie Home Companion, but it was designed as a consortium of multiple public radio stations.
