Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only replica of the Blackfriars Theatre. The Playhouse is located in Staunton, Virginia in the United States. Blackfriars Theatre was the name of two separate theatres in the City of London, built on grounds previously belonging to a Dominican monastery. ... Construction began on the indoor Playhouse in early 2000, when Shenandoah Shakespeare moved to Staunton, placing into action a three-part building plan: replicas of both Blackfriars Theatre and the Globe Theatre, and a Center for Research and Education. In 2001, the construction of the Playhouse was complete, and it opened its doors to the first performance and currently maintains a schedule of six Renaissance performances a week.


In 2005, Shenandoah Shakespeare changed its name to the American Shakespeare Center, to better reflect the scope of the organization's mission and program offerings.
