Construction began on the indoor Playhouse in early 2000, when Shenandoah Shakespeare moved to Staunton, placing into action a three-part building plan: replicas of both Blackfriars Theatre and the Globe Theatre, and a Center for Research and Education. In 2001, the construction of the Playhouse was complete, and it opened its doors to the first performance and currently maintains a schedule of six Renaissance performances a week.

In 2005, Shenandoah Shakespeare changed its name to the American Shakespeare Center, to better reflect the scope of the organization's mission and program offerings.
