The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) is a conservative Catholic organization founded in 1973. It is one of many "Tradition, Family, Property" groups (TFPs) worldwide, all of which are inspired by the work of the Brazilian Catholic intellectual, Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira. Former members witnessed that the organization holds a strict adherence to a traditional interpretation of Christian values, as taught to them by the now deceased Corrêa de Oliveira, founder of their Brazilian parent organization Tradicao, Familia e Propriedade. TFP's worldview is based on Corrêa de Oliveira's 1959 study Revolution and Counter-Revolution. According to the aims laid out in this book, TFP strives to reverse what it sees as the immoral processes that have undermined Christian civilization since the 14th century, the "Revolution" of the study's title. TFP promotes the values of Christianity, and opposes liberal and egalitarian ideas, policies, and trends in both society as a whole and in the Catholic Church. Thus, in addition to supporting official Catholic teaching on matters like abortion, same-sex marriage, and the like, the group distinguishes itself by also being monarchist and feudalist in its political tendencies and advocating a return to rule by "aristocracies" and "elites," such as the titled, landed nobility of the Middle Ages, as witnessed by one of Corrêa de Oliveira's most available works, Nobility & Analogous Traditional Elites in the Allocutions of Pius XII (in this book, Corrêa de Oliveira rejects the "preferential option for the poor" idea that has become the core of modern Catholic social teaching, and argues for a "preferential option for the nobility"). Ardently anti-Communist, the group's Catholic identity did not prevent it from excoriating the Pope over his perceived softness on Communism (Corrêa de Oliveira, The Church and the Communist State: The Impossible Coexistence). 1959 (MCMLIX) was a common year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ... According to Oliveira's teaching there were three "revolutions" which he saw as progressively undemining the church and the correct organiztion of society on earth: they start with the Protestant reformation; then the Enlightenment/French Revolution which ushered in modern political liberalism; and thirdly the Communist revolution which would be the last until a "counter-revolution" should occur.

The group also protests against films and plays that it views as blasphemous, including Goddard's 1985 film Hail Mary, Scorsese's 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ, McNally's 1998 play Corpus Christi, the 1999 movie Dogma, and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. It claims that in October 1999, TFP local coordinators carried out 300 protests at movie theaters against Dogma, and have mobilized 17,000 volunteers to hand out over 5 million protest flyers. The group's public actions and participations in protests have won it some publicity, and they are immediately identifiable in even the largest crowds by the huge medieval banners they carry and the red scarves members wear draped almost toga-style over their shoulders at group appearances. The group's activities, notably its pro-life marches, have won it the admiration of many conservative Catholics. On the other hand, most other Catholics, including conservative ones, consider the group an embarrassment, and allege that it advocates a return to Medieval society by advocating values that are, paradoxically, incompatible with Christianity. Tradition In Action

Tradition in Action is an organization and website operated by a former member of the T.F.P, namely Mr. Atila Sinke Guimaraes, and his associate Dr. Marian Horvat.

Tradition in Action is not in any way linked with the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property.

Dr. Guimaraes was formerly a member of the association, but left shortly after the death of the organization's founder. The rift was regarding the TFP attitude toward Vatican II, whether or not to protest, and to the extent that the Vatican should be criticized. TFP decided not to make an issue of Vatican II, and does not discuss it. TIA felt these critcisms were an necessity given the situation in the Church, and began making critical analysis of modern culture and the post-Vatican II Church/.

Dr. Marian Horvat was not a member of American TFP, (only men may join, women are only "supporters" in that sense) although her brother is vice-president and she helped Dr. Plinio write his book Nobility and Analogous Traditional Elites..
