In 1915 a group of New York pacifists organized the "Anti-militarism Committee" to combat the war spirit of the time. About January 1916 the name was changed to the "Anti-preparedness Committee" and a program of lobbying in Washington was set up. Later in the year the names was changed again, this time to the American Union Against Militarism. Most notable achievements were the work in the successful effort to avert war with Mexico in 1916 and the encouragement of opposition to peacetime conscription following World War I. The office was raided by the government and AUAM publications were sometimes stopped by the postal authorities but the organization continued despite these actions.

Eastman claimed that one could assess the importance of the ERA by the intensity of the opposition to it, but she felt that "this is a fight worth fighting even if it takes ten years.
Eastman also became executive director of the AmericanUnionagainstMilitarism, which lobbied against America's entrance into the European war and more successfully against war with Mexico in 1916, sought to remove profiteering from arms manufacturing, and campaigned against conscription and imperial adventures.
Eastman had married British poet and antiwar activist Walter Fuller in 1916 with whom she had two children, and worked with him until the end of the war, when he returned to England to find work.
He was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union, and its executive director until 1950; many of the ACLU's original landmark cases took place under his direction.
Baldwin was a lifelong pacifist; he was a member of the AmericanUnionagainstMilitarism, which opposed World War I, and spent a year in jail as a conscientious objector rather than submit to the draft.
It was out of the AmericanUnionagainstMilitarism (specifically, its legal arm, the National Civil Liberties Bureau) that the ACLU formed after the war, with Baldwin as its first executive director.
