Americans For Democratic Action (ADA) was formed in January 1947, when Eleanor Roosevelt, John Kenneth Galbraith, Reinhold Niebuhr, Hubert Humphrey and 200 other activists. The made a break with others on the left in that they believed that it was not enough to not a be a Communist; one must be an anti-communist. They regarded defending America from totalitarian foes as a first principle. Saying that iut is better to "light a candle rather than curse the darkness", they constituted an alternative to the anti-communism of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy whom they believed threatened the New Deal.
Brady and his wife Sarah became leading advocates of gun control, education, and other actions to reduce the amount of gun violence in the United States.
It handles civil suits and legal actions on behalf of victims and their families.
Notable among its many activities, in 2004, the Legal Action Project obtained a $2.5 million settlement from Bull's Eye Shooter Supply in Tacoma, Washington and Bushmaster Firearms, Inc. of Windham, Maine for survivors and families of some of the victims killed during the Beltway sniper attacks in October 2002.
